Vietnam War Letters Archived in Famous Collection
Over 100 Vietnam war-letters written by a combat Marine in training and battle were donated
PORTLAND, OR – The 45-year-old letters were written by Marine Cpl. Daryl Eigen in 1966 and 1967 while in training for and during combat on the front lines. The letters have been donated to the War Letters Archive at Chapman University-Leatherby Libraries in Orange California.
The letters were the basis for a war memoir, “A Hellish Place of Angels: Con Thien – One Man’s Journey” (http://www.ahellishplaceofangels.com), a book by Daryl J. Eigen. It is an intimate look at one man’s journey through the escalating nightmare of the Vietnam War, conveyed through personal recollections, letters home, and media coverage.
“Taken as a whole the letters provide a first hand encounter with the making of a Marine infantry man confronted with the realities of war,” “The book fills in the gaps in the letters and tells the story that could not be shared with his family.” “The book is historical, it’s truthful, and it exposes the cracks in understanding history,” says Eigen. “The fallen need to be remembered. The pieces of our selves that were shattered in war have to be stitched together.”
Daryl participated in more than a dozen operations against enemy forces in and around the DMZ, including the brutal battles and siege of Con Thien, a precursor to the Tet Offensive. He was awarded 3 Purple Hearts for wounds incurred during separate engagements with enemy forces.
Eigen felt compelled to honor the letters saved by his family by writing a book that would be a voice for people who’ve served in the military forces and have been unable to communicate about and recover from their traumatic experiences.
The 100 letters were donated and are housed in the War Letters Collection at Chapman University - Leatherby Libraries
